Guide

The steps of salah, in the Hanafi order

This game takes the steps of a two-rakah prayer, such as the fard of Fajr, as taught on our how to pray page: the first rakah from the intention to the second sajdah, and then the final sitting and the salam. The second rakah repeats the first from Al-Fatiha, so it is left out to keep the game short.

All 15 steps

  1. Make your intention
  2. Say the opening takbir
  3. The opening dua (thana)
  4. Seek refuge, say Bismillah
  5. Recite Al-Fatiha
  6. Recite a surah
  7. Ruku
  8. Rise from ruku
  9. First sajdah
  10. Sit between the two sajdahs
  11. Second sajdah
  12. Final sitting, tashahhud
  13. Send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ
  14. Make a dua
  15. Finish with salam

The 10-step level joins the recitations together, so younger children learn the positions first: standing, bowing, rising, the two prostrations with the sitting between them, and the final sitting.

Hanafi position

The opening dua (thana) comes before seeking refuge and Bismillah, which are said quietly. Al-Fatiha and a surah are recited in the first two rakahs. The hands are raised only for the opening takbir.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
The opening dua is a different wording, and the hands are also raised before and after ruku. The Bismillah is recited aloud in loud prayers.
Maliki
No opening dua is said after the takbir; the person begins with Al-Fatiha.
Hanbali
The opening dua is the same as the Hanafi one, and the hands are also raised before and after ruku.

From game to prayer

When the order is easy, follow the step-by-step prayer guide, which shows what to say in Arabic, with transliteration and meaning, for every rakah of every prayer. Then keep the habit with the salah tracker.

  1. Al-Marghinani, al-Hidayah, Kitab al-Salah; Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar. The other madhhabs' positions are summarised from their standard manuals.

Questions

Good to know

What are the steps of salah in order?

Intention, opening takbir, thana, seeking refuge and Bismillah, Al-Fatiha, a surah, ruku, rising, the first sajdah, sitting, the second sajdah, then after the last rakah the tashahhud, salawat, a dua and the salam.

Why is the second rakah not in the game?

It repeats the first rakah from Al-Fatiha onward, without the thana. Leaving it out keeps the game short enough for children.

What is said in ruku and sujud?

Subhana rabbiyal azim three times in ruku, and Subhana rabbiyal ala three times in sujud.

When should children start praying?

The Prophet ﷺ said to teach children to pray at seven (Sunan Abi Dawud). Playing a game like this before that age makes the steps familiar.
