Use the live compass
Press Use my location, then Start the live compass. Hold the phone flat and turn until the arrow points up and turns gold.
Find the qibla from where you are with a live phone compass, exact degrees from north, the distance to Makkah and a map. No app needed.
Press Use my location, or pick a city.

How to read it
The degrees are clockwise from true north. A phone compass points to magnetic north, so use the magnetic bearing with an ordinary compass. The live compass corrects for this automatically.
Your location is used only in your browser to work out the direction. It is never sent or stored.
How it works
01 / Phone
Press Use my location, then Start the live compass. Hold the phone flat and turn until the arrow points up and turns gold.
02 / Compass
Stand with an ordinary compass and face the magnetic bearing shown. It already allows for the difference between magnetic and true north.
03 / Map
Open the map to see the shortest route to the Kaaba. Line it up with a street or wall you know.
Guide
The qibla is the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah, which Muslims face in every prayer. Allah says: "So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you are, turn your faces toward it."1
The direction is the start of the shortest path over the curved Earth from you to the Kaaba, called a great circle. On a flat map this path looks curved. That is why the qibla from New York is northeast, about 58°, even though Makkah is south of New York on most maps. The shortest route crosses the Atlantic towards Europe and then bends down to Arabia.
The degrees are measured from true north, the direction of the North Pole. A compass needle points to magnetic north, which can be many degrees away. In New York it is about 12° west of true north, and in London about 1° east. This tool takes that difference, the magnetic declination, from the World Magnetic Model 2025 for your exact spot, and shows the bearing to use with an ordinary compass.
Someone who can see the Kaaba must face the Kaaba itself. Someone far away must face its direction (jihah), not its exact point. A small turn to the left or right does not affect the prayer, and many Hanafi scholars allow up to 45° either side, as long as some part of the face is still toward the qibla. If you prayed after doing your best to find it and later learn you were wrong, the prayer is still valid.2

Questions
Press Use my location above. The tool shows the qibla in degrees clockwise from true north, the compass bearing to use, and the distance to the Kaaba.
Northeast. From New York it is about 58° from north, from Chicago about 49° and from Los Angeles about 24°. The shortest route over the globe heads northeast, not southeast.
Phone compasses are easily thrown off by metal and magnets, and many apps forget the difference between magnetic and true north. Some older masjids also used a flat-map direction. Calibrate your phone and compare with the degrees here.
No. Your location is used only in your browser to work out the direction and is never sent to our servers.
Yes. For someone far from Makkah, facing the general direction is enough in the Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali schools, and a prayer made after a genuine effort stays valid even if you later find you were off.
Use the mihrab of a nearby masjid, ask local Muslims, or use the sun on the two days a year it is directly over the Kaaba, around 28 May and 16 July.
