    Guide

Dhikr after salah, and the best phrases to count.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever says Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Allahu akbar 33 times after every prayer, which makes 99, and completes the hundred with: La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ala kulli shayin qadir, his sins are forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea."1 Another narration has Allahu akbar 34 times to make the hundred.2 The "After-salah" mode above runs 33, 33 and 34 in one go.

    Phrases with great reward

    • Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi, 100 times a day: sins are wiped away even if they are like the foam of the sea.3
    • La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ala kulli shayin qadir, 100 times a day: like freeing ten slaves, a hundred good deeds written and protection from Satan until evening.4
    • Astaghfirullah: the Prophet ﷺ sought forgiveness more than seventy times a day.5
    • La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah: "a treasure from the treasures of Paradise".6

Counting on the fingers, beads or a counter

    Hanafi position

Counting dhikr on the fingers of the right hand is sunnah, because the fingers will testify on the Day of Judgement.7 Using beads or a counter is permitted, as some Companions counted on pebbles and date stones, and it is a help to keep count. What matters is the presence of the heart.

    Tips for steady dhikr

    • Pick one phrase and a small number you can keep every day. Consistency is better than a lot once.
    • Use quiet moments: after each salah, while walking or driving, and before sleep.
    • Understand what you say. The meaning appears under each phrase in the counter.
