Guide
Asma ul Husna, the most beautiful names.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred less one. Whoever enumerates them will enter Paradise."1 Scholars explain that "enumerating" them means learning them, understanding their meanings and living by them, not only reciting a list. Allah says: "And to Allah belong the best names, so call upon Him by them."2
Which list is this?
The hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari gives the number but not the names. The list most people know, and the one used here, comes from a narration in Jami at-Tirmidhi.3 Many scholars, including Ibn Hajar and Ibn Taymiyyah, held that this list was added by a narrator rather than said by the Prophet ﷺ, and other lists from the Quran and Sunnah differ by a few names. Allah also has names beyond these 99, as the Prophet ﷺ asked Allah "by every name You have, by which You named Yourself... or kept in the knowledge of the unseen with You."4
How to learn them
- Learn five a day with the flashcards. Read the Arabic, say it aloud, then turn the card.
- Think of one way each name shows in your life. Al-Razzaq when you eat, Al-Ghaffar after a mistake.
- Use them in your duas: "Ya Razzaq, provide for me", "Ya Ghaffar, forgive me".
- Take the quiz every few days, and tick the names you know.
