Guide
How to learn a surah word by word
Choose a surah, then work through it one ayah at a time. Tap each Arabic word to hear it and see what it means, play the ayah until you can say it with the reciter, then hide the words and recite it from memory. Short surahs from Juz Amma, such as Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, are the best place to start.
A routine that works
- Listen first. Play the ayah 3 or 5 times at Slower speed and follow the highlighted word.
- Word by word. Tap each word you find hard and say it back. The transliteration helps at first, but the audio is the real guide.
- Say it with the reciter. Set Play each ayah to Until I stop and recite along.
- Memorise. Press Hide some words until the whole ayah is hidden, and recite it. Tap a hidden word only when you are stuck.
- Join the ayat. Turn on Go on to the next ayah and recite the surah from the start each day before adding a new ayah.
Which surahs to learn first
For the prayer, learn Al-Fatiha first (it has its own trainer), then a few short surahs to recite after it: Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas, Al-Kawthar, Al-Asr and An-Nasr. Many people then learn the surahs read on certain days or nights, such as Yasin, Al-Mulk before sleep, and Al-Kahf on Friday.
Reading the transliteration
The word transliteration follows Quran.com. A line over a vowel (ā, ī, ū) means a long vowel, held for two counts. A dot under a letter (ḥ, ṣ, ḍ, ṭ, ẓ) marks a throat or heavy letter, and ʿ is the letter ʿayn. A word that begins with a hyphen, such as l-lahi, joins onto the word before it, so you read the two together. Transliteration cannot show every Arabic sound, so let the recitation guide you, and read to a teacher who knows tajwid when you can.
About the words and the audio
The Arabic is the Uthmani script from Tanzil, the same text used across AmalKit. The word meanings are short glosses to help you follow, not a full translation; the English under each ayah is Sahih International. The recitation is by Sheikh Mishary Rashid Alafasy, and the highlighted word comes from Quran.com's word timings. On a few long ayat the timings are not available, so the ayah plays without the highlight.
The licences for the Quran.com word data and the recitation are being confirmed before launch.
Questions
Good to know
Which surah should I learn first?
Al-Fatiha, because it is recited in every unit of every prayer. Then short surahs from Juz Amma: Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas, Al-Kawthar and Al-Asr.
How can I memorise a surah quickly?
Short daily sessions work best. Learn one ayah at a time: listen 3 to 5 times slowly, say it with the reciter, then hide the words and recite it. Each day, recite everything you know from the start before adding a new ayah.
Can I hear each word on its own?
Yes. Tap any word to hear just that word from the recitation, with its transliteration and meaning.
Can I slow the recitation down?
Yes. Set Speed to Slower or Slow, for learning. The highlighted word stays in step at any speed.
How do I share a surah?
Copy the address after choosing a surah. It ends in ?s= and the surah number, for example /learn-quran?s=67 for Al-Mulk, and opens straight on that surah.
Does it remember where I stopped?
Yes. Your last surah, the ayah you reached in each surah, and your settings are saved on this device.
Who is the reciter?
Sheikh Mishary Rashid Alafasy. The audio and the word timings come from Quran.com.
