Guide
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam: 2.5% of the wealth you have held for a full lunar year, once it is at or above a minimum called the nisab. Allah says: "Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase."1
Amina has $6,000 in the bank, $400 in cash and a 22k gold necklace of 20 grams. She owes $900 on a credit card. With gold at $128 a gram, the necklace holds 18.3 g of pure gold, worth about $2,345. Her assets are $8,745. After the $900 debt she has $7,845. That is above the silver nisab, so her zakat is 2.5% of $7,845: $196.13.
The nisab is 20 mithqal of gold (87.48 g) or 200 dirhams of silver (612.36 g). When wealth is cash or a mix of different kinds, use the silver nisab, because it is lower and so better for the poor. Gold and silver, cash and trade goods are added together by value to reach the nisab.2
Zakat is due on all gold and silver, including jewelry that is worn regularly, by the weight of pure metal. A 22k piece is 91.67% gold, a 21k piece 87.5% and an 18k piece 75%.
| Unit | Grams |

| Silver nisab | 612.36 g, or 52.5 tola |
If you can take money out of the account, many contemporary scholars, including Hanafi muftis in North America and the UK, say zakat is due on what you could withdraw today, after the early-withdrawal penalty and tax. If you cannot touch the money at all until retirement, most say zakat is not due until you can. An ISA is treated like any savings or investment account.
Shares bought to sell for a profit are trade goods, so zakat is due on their full market value. For shares held for the dividends, Mufti Taqi Usmani's view, common among Hanafi scholars, is that zakat is due only on your share of the company's zakatable assets (its cash, receivables and stock). If you cannot find that figure, pay on the full value to be safe. Most scholars treat crypto held as an investment like a trade good, at its market value on your zakat date.
Business stock is valued at the price you would sell it for. Land or property bought to resell is valued at today's market price. Your own home, car, furniture and tools of your trade are not zakatable. For a rental property, zakat is due on the rent you still have on your zakat date, not on the value of the property.
Debts you owe now reduce your zakatable wealth: credit cards, bills, unpaid wages and loans due. For a mortgage or other long loan, take off only the payments due in the next 12 months, not the whole balance.3
Zakat is due when you have held wealth at or above the nisab for a full lunar year (hawl). What matters is having the nisab at the start and the end of the year. If it drops in between but does not disappear completely, the year continues. Many people pick a fixed date, such as 1 Ramadan, and pay every year on that date. You may also pay early once you own the nisab.
Allah names eight groups in Surah At-Tawbah: the poor, the needy, those who collect it, those whose hearts are to be won over, freeing captives, people in debt, in the cause of Allah, and the stranded traveller.4 In the Hanafi school, zakat cannot be given to your own parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren or spouse, or to a non-Muslim, and the recipient must be given ownership of it.

If $10,000 is your total zakatable wealth after debts, and it has been at or above the nisab for a lunar year, the zakat is 2.5% of it: $250.
It changes with the price of silver and gold. The calculator above shows today's nisab in your currency: 612.36 g of silver or 87.48 g of gold. Hanafi scholars use the silver nisab for cash and mixed wealth.

In the Hanafi school, yes: all gold and silver is zakatable, worn or not. In the Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools, permissible jewelry that is worn regularly is exempt.
Many scholars say yes, on the amount you could withdraw today after penalty and tax. If you have no access to the money at all, most say it is not due until you do.
