9 verses from the Quran about Ramadan and fasting, each in Arabic with transliteration and the Sahih International translation, and a line on its context.

Yaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo kutiba 'alaikumus Siyaamu kamaa kutiba 'alal lazeena min qablikum la'allakum tattaqoon

O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous -

Fasting is prescribed for you as it was for those before you, so that you may gain taqwa. The purpose of the fast in one word.

Ayyaamam ma'doodaat; faman kaana minkum mareedan aw'alaa safarin fa'iddatum min ayyaamin ukhar; wa 'alal lazeena yuteeqoonahoo fidyatun ta'aamu miskeenin faman tatawwa'a khairan fahuwa khairulo lahoo wa an tasoomoo khairul lakum in kuntum ta'lamoon

[Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] - then an equal number of days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. And whoever volunteers excess - it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.

A limited number of days. The sick and the traveller make up the days later. Most scholars, citing Salamah ibn al-Akwa (Sahih al-Bukhari), say the early choice to pay fidya instead of fasting was lifted by the next ayah; fidya remains for those who cannot fast at all, such as the very old.

Shahru Ramadaanallazeee unzila feehil Qur'aanu hudal linnaasi wa baiyinaatim minal hudaa wal furqaan; faman shahida minkumush shahra falyasumhu wa man kaana mareedan aw 'alaa safarin fa'iddatum min ayyaamin ukhar; yureedul laahu bikumul yusra wa laa yureedu bikumul 'usra wa litukmilul 'iddata wa litukabbirul laaha 'alaa maa hadaakum wa la'allakum tashkuroon

The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.

The only ayah that names Ramadan: the month the Quran was sent down. Whoever witnesses the month fasts it. Allah wants ease for you, not hardship, and you glorify Him for His guidance, which scholars link to the takbir of Eid.

Wa izaa sa alaka 'ibaadee 'annee fa innee qareebun ujeebu da'wataddaa'i izaa da'aani falyastajeeboo lee walyu minoo bee la'allahum yarshudoon

And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.

Placed in the middle of the fasting ayat: I am near, I answer the caller when he calls. Ibn Kathir reads its place as an invitation to make dua while fasting and at iftar.

It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives [for sexual relations]. They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the sunset. And do not have relations with them as long as you are staying for worship in the mosques. These are the limits [set by] Allah, so do not approach them. Thus does Allah make clear His ordinances to the people that they may become righteous.

Intimacy is allowed on the nights of Ramadan. Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn is clear from the black thread, then complete the fast until night. It ends with itikaf in the mosques.

Innaa anzalnaahu fee lailatil qadr Wa maa adraaka ma lailatul qadr Lailatul qadri khairum min alfee shahr Tanaz zalul malaa-ikatu war roohu feeha bi izni-rab bihim min kulli amr Salaamun hiya hattaa mat la'il fajr

1 Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of Decree. 2 And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? 3 The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. 4 The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. 5 Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.

Surah Al-Qadr: the Quran was sent down on the Night of Decree, better than a thousand months, and the angels descend in it. The Prophet ﷺ told us to seek it in the odd nights of the last ten (Sahih al-Bukhari).

Innaaa anzalnaahu fee lailatim mubaarakah; innaa kunnaa munzireen Feehaa yufraqu kullu amrin hakeem

3 Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. 4 On that night is made distinct every precise matter -

The opening of Surah Ad-Dukhan: a blessed night on which every wise matter is made distinct. Ibn Kathir says this is Laylat al-Qadr in Ramadan, and rejects the view that it is the middle night of Shaban.

Fakulee washrabee wa qarree 'ainaa; fa immaa tarayinnna minal bashari ahadan faqooleee innee nazartu lir Rahmaani sawman falan ukallimal yawma insiyyaa

So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, 'Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.' "

Maryam was told to say she had vowed a fast (sawm) to the Most Merciful and would not speak. A fast of silence was part of earlier law; when a man vowed to stand in the sun and not speak, the Prophet ﷺ told him to speak, sit and complete his fast (Sahih al-Bukhari).

Innal muslimeena wal muslimaati wal mu'mineena wal mu'minaati walqaaniteena walqaanitaati wassaadiqeena wassaadiqaati wassaabireena wassaabiraati walkhaashi'eena walkhaashi'aati walmutasaddiqeena walmutasaddiqaati wassaaa'imeena wassaaa'imaati walhaafizeena furoojahum walhaafizaati waz zaakireenal laaha kaseeranw waz zaakiraati a'addal laahu lahum maghfiratanw wa ajran 'azeemaa

Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.

Among the ten qualities that Allah promises forgiveness and a great reward: the men and the women who fast.

About these verses, and how to use them

Ramadan is named once in the Quran, in 2:185: the month in which the Quran was sent down. The ayat on fasting, 2:183 to 187, sit together in Surah Al-Baqarah and set out nearly the whole fast: its purpose, who may make up days later, the fidya, the hours from dawn to night, and itikaf. Surah Al-Qadr and the opening of Surah Ad-Dukhan describe the blessed night on which the Quran came down. And right in the middle of the fasting ayat, Allah says: I am near.

Who pays fidya, Hanafi first

Hanafi position

Fidya, feeding one poor person for each day missed, is for someone who cannot fast and has no hope of making the days up, such as the very old or the chronically ill. A pregnant or nursing woman who fears for herself or her child may leave the fast, makes the days up later, and pays no fidya.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i, Hanbali
If a pregnant or nursing woman leaves the fast only out of fear for the child, she makes up the days and also pays fidya for each day.
Maliki
A nursing woman who fears for her child makes up the days and pays fidya; a pregnant woman makes up the days only.
