Guide
What Laylat al-Qadr is, and how to seek it.
Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree, is the night the Quran was first sent down. Allah says it "is better than a thousand months".1 Worship on this one night is worth more than worship over more than 83 years.
Which night is it?
Its exact date is hidden. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan."2 Many scholars, and many Hanafi scholars in particular, held the 27th night to be the most likely, following Ubayy ibn Kab, who swore that it was the 27th.3 The safest way is to strive on all ten nights.
Night begins at sunset
In the Islamic calendar the night comes before its day. The 27th night begins at Maghrib on the evening before the 27th fast. With Ramadan starting on 8 February 2027, that is sunset on Friday 5 March. The table above does this for you.
The dua for Laylat al-Qadr
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
Allāhumma innaka ʿafuwwun tuḥibbul-ʿafwa faʿfu ʿannī
"O Allah, You are Pardoning and love to pardon, so pardon me."
Jami at-Tirmidhi 3513, graded sahih. Aishah asked what to say if she knew which night it was, and the Prophet ﷺ taught her this.
What to do on these nights
- Pray Isha and Fajr in congregation, and pray extra at night, especially in the last third.
- Recite and reflect on the Quran.
- Make dua, for yourself, your family and the ummah, and seek forgiveness.
- Give charity. Some people give a little every night of the last ten so they are sure to give on Laylat al-Qadr.
A plan for busy nights
- Short, 20 minutes: two rakahs after Isha, the dua above many times, and a page of Quran.
- Medium, one hour: add the witr late in the night, a juz of Quran or a long surah such as Al-Mulk, and istighfar before sehri.
- Full night: taraweeh, then rest, then wake for the last third (the table shows when it starts) for tahajjud, Quran and dua until sehri.
Itikaf in the last ten days
Itikaf in the masjid for the last ten days of Ramadan is sunnah muakkadah ala al-kifayah: a confirmed sunnah for the community as a whole. If at least one person in the area does it, the rest are not blameworthy. It starts before sunset on the 20th of Ramadan and ends when the Eid moon is sighted.
Other madhhabs
- Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali
- Itikaf is a sunnah, strongly recommended in the last ten days, with no communal obligation attached.
- Quran 97:3, translation by Sahih International.
- Sahih al-Bukhari 2017.
- Sahih Muslim 762.
- Al-Marghinani, al-Hidayah, Bab al-Itikaf; Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar. The other madhhabs' positions are summarised from their standard manuals.
