O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow [on] the Day when Allah will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him. Their light will proceed before them and on their right; they will say, "Our Lord, perfect for us our light and forgive us. Indeed, You are over all things competent."

Tawbatan nasuha, sincere repentance. Umar and Ibn Masud explained it as repenting from a sin and never going back to it (Tafsir Ibn Kathir).

17 The repentance accepted by Allah is only for those who do wrong in ignorance [or carelessness] and then repent soon after. It is those to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness, and Allah is ever Knowing and Wise. 18 But repentance is not [accepted] of those who [continue to] do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "Indeed, I have repented now," or of those who die while they are disbelievers. For them We have prepared a painful punishment.

Repentance is accepted from those who do wrong out of ignorance and repent soon after, which early scholars explained as any time before death begins. Repenting only when death arrives is not accepted.

68 And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty. 69 Multiplied for him is the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated - 70 Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful. 71 And he who repents and does righteousness does indeed turn to Allah with [accepted] repentance.

After shirk, murder and zina: whoever repents, believes and does good, Allah replaces their evil deeds with good ones.

But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.

Allah keeps forgiving whoever repents, believes, does good and then stays on guidance. Repentance is followed by steadiness.

And they ask you about menstruation. Say, "It is harm, so keep away from wives during menstruation. And do not approach them until they are pure. And when they have purified themselves, then come to them from where Allah has ordained for you. Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves."

Allah loves at-tawwabin, those who repent again and again.

And it is He who accepts repentance from his servants and pardons misdeeds, and He knows what you do.

He accepts repentance from His servants, pardons sins, and knows what you do.

Do they not know that it is Allah who accepts repentance from His servants and receives charities and that it is Allah who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful?

It is Allah who accepts repentance and receives charity. Revealed about Companions who confessed their sins after Tabuk.

The forgiver of sin, acceptor of repentance, severe in punishment, owner of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the destination.

Forgiver of sin, acceptor of repentance, severe in punishment, owner of bounty: hope and fear side by side.

But whoever repents after his wrongdoing and reforms, indeed, Allah will turn to him in forgiveness. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Repentance with reform: whoever repents after doing wrong and puts things right, Allah turns to them.

And [saying], "Seek forgiveness of your Lord and repent to Him, [and] He will let you enjoy a good provision for a specified term and give every doer of favor his favor. But if you turn away, then indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a great Day.

The opening of Surah Hud: ask forgiveness of your Lord, then turn to Him, and He will give you good enjoyment of life for a set term.

Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.

The first repentance. Adam received words from his Lord, the dua of 7:23, and Allah accepted his repentance.

And [mention] the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."

Yunus, in the darkness inside the whale: there is no god but You, glory be to You, I have been of the wrongdoers. The next ayah says Allah answered him.

[David] said, "He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe [in addition] to his ewes. And indeed, many associates oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds - and few are they." And David became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing [in prostration] and turned in repentance [to Allah].

Dawud realised he had been tested, asked his Lord's forgiveness, fell down bowing and turned back to Him. Many mushafs mark a sajdah here.

And [He also forgave] the three who were left behind [and regretted their error] to the point that the earth closed in on them in spite of its vastness and their souls confined them and they were certain that there is no refuge from Allah except in Him. Then He turned to them so they could repent. Indeed, Allah is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.

Kab ibn Malik and two others stayed behind from Tabuk without excuse. After fifty days in which no one spoke to them, Allah accepted their repentance (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).

About these verses, and how to use them

Tawbah means turning back: leaving a sin and returning to Allah. The Quran calls Allah at-Tawwab, the One who keeps accepting repentance, and says He loves those who keep repenting (2:222). It tells us when repentance is accepted, that even the gravest sins can be replaced with good deeds (25:70), and that the door closes only at death. It also tells the repentance stories of Adam, Yunus and Dawud, and of the three Companions who stayed behind from Tabuk. These verses are about the act of repenting. For Allah's forgiveness itself, see Quran verses about forgiveness.

The conditions of repentance

Imam an-Nawawi, in the chapter on repentance in Riyad as-Salihin, gives the conditions the scholars list: stop the sin, regret it, and resolve never to go back to it. If the sin was against another person, a fourth is added: give back their right, or ask them to forgive you. Repentance has no special words, though seeking forgiveness with the tongue is part of it, and Sayyidul Istighfar is the best-known wording. The Prophet ﷺ said Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant than a man who lost his camel, with his food and water, in a desert and then found it again (Sahih al-Bukhari 6309, Sahih Muslim 2747), and that Allah stretches out His hand at night so the one who sinned by day may repent, and by day so the one who sinned by night may repent, until the sun rises from the west (Sahih Muslim 2759). The Sunnah also teaches two rakat of prayer before asking forgiveness: see Salat al-Tawbah. If you worry that a sin is too big, read does Allah forgive all sins?

Questions

Good to know

What does the Quran say about repentance?

That Allah accepts repentance from His servants (42:25), loves those who repent (2:222), and can replace evil deeds with good ones for those who repent, believe and do good (25:70).

What is tawbah nasuha?

Sincere repentance, from 66:8. Umar and Ibn Masud explained it as repenting from a sin and not going back to it.

Is it ever too late to repent?

Repentance is accepted until death begins (4:18) and until the sun rises from the west (Sahih Muslim 2703). The Prophet ﷺ said Allah accepts a servant's repentance as long as the death rattle has not reached his throat (Jami at-Tirmidhi 3537, graded hasan).

What is the difference between repentance and forgiveness?

Repentance (tawbah) is what you do: stop the sin, regret it and resolve not to return. Forgiveness (maghfirah) is what Allah gives. Seeking forgiveness (istighfar) is asking for it, and the Quran often joins the two: "ask forgiveness of your Lord, then repent to Him" (11:3).
