    Guide

What is dhikr, and which dhikr to say every day

Dhikr means remembering Allah: saying His praise with the tongue while the heart is present. It is the easiest worship there is. You can do it standing, sitting or lying down, at home, at work or in the car, with no wudu needed. Allah says: "O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance."1 And: "Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured."2 Dhikr is also spelled zikr, thikr and dikhr; they are the same word.

    A simple daily dhikr routine

    • After every fard prayer: Subhanallah 33, Alhamdulillah 33 and Allahu akbar 34 (line 05). The counter keeps track of all five prayers.
    • Once a day, at any time: the four "100 a day" lines. Together they take roughly 10 to 15 minutes, and can be split through the day.
    • In spare moments: the short lines with no fixed number, such as Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi, subhanallahil azim, while walking or waiting.
    • Morning and evening: the set of protections in the morning and evening adhkar, which has its own counter.

Start small. The Prophet ﷺ said the deeds most loved by Allah are those done regularly, even if they are few.3 Three lines every day is better than all sixteen once.

    Dhikr and dua: the difference

Dhikr is praising and remembering Allah. Dua is asking Him for something. Many phrases are both, such as the dua of Yunus (line 14). The hadith calls alhamdulillah the best dua and la ilaha illallah the best dhikr.4 For duas for each need, see the dua library.

    Counting your dhikr

The Prophet ﷺ told the women of the Companions to count tasbih on their fingers, "for they will be questioned and made to speak".5 Counting on the fingers of the right hand is the sunnah. A counter like the one above, or beads, is a permitted aid when the numbers are large.

Dhikr without wudu, or during a period

    Hanafi position

Dhikr, salawat, istighfar and dua are allowed in any state: without wudu, in janabah, and during menstruation or postnatal bleeding. Wudu is better, not required. A person in janabah or on her period does not recite the Quran as Quran, but may say Quranic phrases such as Hasbunallah or the dua of Yunus with the intention of dhikr or dua.

    Other madhhabs
    Shafi'i, Hanbali
The same: dhikr is allowed in every state, and Quranic words may be said with the intention of dhikr.
    Maliki
The same for dhikr. A woman on her period may also recite the Quran from memory in the school's relied-upon view.

What this list leaves out on purpose

Some popular dhikr cards carry rewards that have no sound source, such as fixed numbers of palaces or a certain dhikr for each day of the week. We have kept to dhikr from the Quran and from hadith graded sahih or hasan, and the grading is shown under each line. Where a chain is disputed, as with line 09, we say so.

    1. Quran 33:41, translation by Sahih International.
    2. Quran 13:28, translation by Sahih International.
    3. Sahih al-Bukhari 6464; Sahih Muslim 783.
    4. Jami at-Tirmidhi 3383, graded hasan.
    5. Sunan Abi Dawud 1501; Jami at-Tirmidhi 3583, graded hasan.

    Questions

    Good to know

    What is the best dhikr?

The Prophet ﷺ said the best dhikr is la ilaha illallah (Tirmidhi 3383). He also said the four words Subhanallah, walhamdulillah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar are the most beloved words to Allah (Muslim 2137).

How many times should I do dhikr a day?

There is no single number. Some dhikr have a set count, such as Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi 100 times a day, or 33, 33 and 34 after each prayer. Others have no limit. Choose a few you can keep every day.

What is the dhikr after salah?

Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Allahu akbar 34 times, or 33 times followed by La ilaha illallahu wahdahu to make a hundred (Muslim 596, 597). The full set is on the adhkar after salah page.

Can I do dhikr without wudu?

Yes. Dhikr, salawat and dua are allowed without wudu and during a period. Wudu is better but not required.

Does the counter save my dhikr?

Yes, on this device. Each line keeps today's count, and all counts start again at midnight on your device. The last seven days' totals are shown in the side panel.

Is dikhr the same as dhikr?

Yes. Dhikr (ذكر) is written in English as dhikr, zikr, thikr or dikhr. All mean the remembrance of Allah.
