Durood Ibrahim, the salawat of the prayer

Durood Ibrahim, also called as-Salat al-Ibrahimiyyah, is the salawat the Prophet ﷺ taught when the Companions asked how to send blessings on him. It begins Allahumma salli ala Muhammadin wa ala ali Muhammad, and it is recited in the last sitting of every prayer, after Attahiyat. It is also the best salawat to say at any other time.

Dua 1: Durood Ibrahim

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā ṣallayta ʿalā Ibrāhīma wa ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, innaka Ḥamīdum-Majīd. Allāhumma bārik ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā bārakta ʿalā Ibrāhīma wa ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, innaka Ḥamīdum-Majīd.

O Allah, send prayers on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent prayers on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim. You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, send blessings on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim. You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3370, from Kab ibn Ujrah

Dua 2: The command to send salawat

Innallāha wa malāʾikatahū yuṣallūna ʿalan-nabiyy, yā ayyuhal-ladhīna āmanū ṣallū ʿalayhi wa sallimū taslīmā

Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.

Guide

When and how to say it

Durood Ibrahim, also called as-Salat al-Ibrahimiyyah, is the salawat the Prophet ﷺ taught when the Companions asked how to send blessings on him. It begins Allahumma salli ala Muhammadin wa ala ali Muhammad, and it is recited in the last sitting of every prayer, after Attahiyat. It is also the best salawat to say at any other time.

When to say Durood Ibrahim

  • In the final sitting of every prayer, after Attahiyat and before the closing dua.
  • When the adhan ends, before the dua after the adhan.
  • At the start of your own duas, after praising Allah.1
  • On Fridays, when the Prophet ﷺ asked us to send much salawat on him, saying it is shown to him.2
  • Whenever his name is mentioned. He called the person who hears his name and does not send salawat a miser.3

The reward

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever sends one salawat on him, Allah sends ten on that person.4

Hanafi position

In the final sitting, Durood Ibrahim is an emphasised sunnah. The prayer is valid without it, but it should not be left out. Outside the prayer, sending salawat once in your life is fard, and scholars of the school hold it is required when his name is mentioned, at least once in a gathering.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i, Hanbali
Salawat on the Prophet ﷺ in the final tashahhud is a pillar of the prayer, so the prayer is not valid without it. The Shafi'i minimum is Allahumma salli ala Muhammad.
Maliki
It is sunnah in the final sitting, as in the Hanafi school.

Adding "Sayyidina"

The hadith wording does not contain sayyidina (our master). Many later Hanafi and Shafi'i scholars say adding it is good manners, while others prefer to keep exactly to the words he taught, especially inside the prayer. Either way, the text above is the wording from the hadith.

Questions

Good to know

Is Durood Ibrahim the same as Allahumma salli ala Muhammad?

Yes. Allahumma salli ala Muhammad is how Durood Ibrahim begins, and on its own it is the shortest form of salawat.

Is Durood Ibrahim compulsory in salah?

In the Hanafi and Maliki schools it is sunnah, so the prayer is valid without it. In the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools salawat in the final tashahhud is a pillar of the prayer.

What is the shortest durood?

Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, or Allahumma salli ala Muhammad. Durood Ibrahim is the best form, since it is the wording he taught.

When is the best time to send durood?

Any time, and especially on Friday, after the adhan and in the last sitting of the prayer.
