Guide
When is Ramadan 2027, and why the date moves.
Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027 and to last 29 or 30 days, ending with Eid al-Fitr on Tuesday 9 or Wednesday 10 March. It is Ramadan 1448 in the Islamic calendar.
Why the start date is not fixed
The Islamic calendar is lunar. Each month starts with the new crescent moon, and a lunar year is about 354 days, so Ramadan comes about 11 days earlier every year. In 2026 it began on 18 February. In 2027 it begins around 8 February, and in 2028 around 28 January.
Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar and the Fiqh Council of North America work the start out in advance. Many communities instead wait to see the crescent on the evening of 29 Shaban. If the moon is not seen, Shaban is completed as 30 days and Ramadan starts a day later. So some masjids may begin on Tuesday 9 February.
Ramadan dates for the next ten years
Expected first fast and Eid al-Fitr by the Umm al-Qura calendar. Local moon sighting can move each date by a day. In 2030 Ramadan comes twice, in January and again in December.

How long the fasts will be
Because Ramadan 2027 is in late winter, the fasts are short for most of the northern hemisphere: roughly 11 to 13 hours in New York, Toronto and London, and about 12 to 13 hours in Dubai and Riyadh. See the exact times in the Ramadan calendar.
Preparing in Shaban
Aishah said she never saw the Prophet ﷺ fast more in any month, other than Ramadan, than in Shaban.1 Use the weeks before Ramadan to make up missed fasts, build a habit of reading Quran, and settle your zakat.
Missed fasts from last Ramadan should be made up before the next Ramadan arrives. If someone delays without an excuse, they still make them up afterwards, and no extra fidya is due for the delay.
Other madhhabs
- Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali
- The make-up fasts are made up, and if they were delayed past the next Ramadan without an excuse, one fidya (feeding a poor person) is also due for each day.
- Sahih al-Bukhari 1969; Sahih Muslim 1156.
- Al-Marghinani, al-Hidayah, Kitab al-Sawm, on qada. The other madhhabs' positions are summarised from their standard manuals.
