Questions Zakat and charity

Do you have to pay zakat in Ramadan?

Pending review by our scholars

Short answer

No. Zakat is due on your own zakat date, when a lunar year has passed over your nisab, in whatever month that falls. Many people choose Ramadan for the extra reward, which is fine if they pay early, but zakat that is already due should not be held back to wait for Ramadan.

Hanafi position

Zakat is tied to your hawl (zakat year), not to Ramadan. Paying before the due date is valid. Delaying it past the due date without an excuse is sinful according to the relied-upon fatwa, though it remains owed and is valid when paid.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

Nothing in the Quran or Sunnah makes Ramadan the month of zakat. Zakat falls due when a lunar year has passed since you first owned the nisab. For one person that is in Safar, for another in Dhul Hijjah. The four schools agree on this.

Many Muslims still like to give in Ramadan, because good deeds are rewarded more in it and the Prophet ﷺ was at his most generous then. You can do this in a sound way:

  • If your zakat date is after Ramadan, pay in Ramadan as an advance, then check the figure on your real date and top up if needed.
  • If your date is before Ramadan, pay on time. Do not hold zakat that is already due for months to catch Ramadan. Give extra sadaqah in Ramadan instead.

Some people decide to move their zakat date to Ramadan. In the Hanafi school the date itself is fixed by when you first owned the nisab, but paying early is allowed, so you can settle every year's zakat in Ramadan as long as it is never later than the real due date. See paying zakat early or in instalments.

The charity that is tied to Ramadan is zakat al-fitr, paid by every eligible Muslim before the Eid prayer.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Munaafiqoon 63:10

And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, "My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous."

A warning against putting off what you owe to Allah from your wealth.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6

Sahih

... وكان أجود ما يكون في رمضان ...

"He was the most generous of people, and he was at his most generous in Ramadan."

Ibn Abbas describes the virtue of giving in Ramadan; it does not make Ramadan the due date of zakat.

Sahih

... وأما العباس فهي علي ومثلها معها ...

"As for al-Abbas, it is upon me, and the same again with it."

Scholars took this as showing that al-Abbas had paid his zakat in advance, which allows paying early.

Where the ruling is recorded

  • Radd al-Muhtar, Kitab al-Zakat, on whether zakat must be paid immediately once due. The fatwa that delay without excuse is sinful.
  • al-Hidaya, Kitab al-Zakat, on paying zakat before it falls due. Advance payment is valid once the nisab is owned.
