Guide
The nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must own before zakat is due. It is 612.36 g of silver (200 dirhams) or 87.48 g of gold (20 mithqal). The weights never change; their value moves with the price of silver and gold, which is why the nisab in money is different every day. The figures above use live spot prices.
When your wealth is cash, savings, trade goods or a mix of different kinds, use the silver nisab, because it is lower and so more of the poor are helped. Gold, silver, cash and trade goods are added together by value to reach it. If you own only gold and nothing else zakatable, the gold nisab of 87.48 g applies to it.1
The Prophet ﷺ set the nisab at 200 dirhams of silver and 20 dinars (mithqal) of gold.2 Hanafi institutions such as Darul Uloom Deoband convert them with a tola of 11.664 g: 52.5 tola of silver = 612.36 g, and 7.5 tola of gold = 87.48 g. Others use a lighter dirham and dinar from historical coins, which gives about 595 g and 85 g. Both are shown above. AmalKit uses 612.36 g and 87.48 g by default, as in our zakat calculator.
For example, if the silver nisab is 1,000 US dollars on your zakat date, someone who has had 5,000 dollars in savings for a lunar year pays 2.5% of 5,000: 125 dollars. Work out yours in full with the zakat calculator.
What matters is owning the nisab at the start and at the end of the lunar year. If your wealth dips below it in between but does not vanish completely, the year carries on.
Many people pick a fixed date, such as the 1st of Ramadan, and check the nisab on that day each year.
