Questions Death and funeral

Is crying allowed when someone dies in Islam?

Pending review by our scholars

Short answer

Yes. Tears and sadness are allowed and are a mercy Allah placed in the heart; the Prophet ﷺ himself wept when his son Ibrahim died. What is forbidden is wailing: screaming, slapping the face, tearing clothes and words of complaint against Allah's decree.

Hanafi position

Weeping without wailing is permissible. Niyahah (wailing aloud, listing the dead person's qualities in lament), slapping the face, tearing clothes and similar acts are haram. The family should be helped to be patient.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

Some people think that a strong Muslim should not cry at a death. That is not the sunnah. When his little son Ibrahim was dying, the Prophet ﷺ wept. When a Companion was surprised, he said this was mercy, and that the eye weeps and the heart grieves, but we say only what pleases our Lord. The four schools agree.

What is allowed:

  • Tears, sadness and quiet crying, at the time and later.
  • Speaking about the dead person with love and making dua for them.
  • Saying Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un and asking Allah for something better.

What is forbidden:

  • Wailing (niyahah): screaming and lamenting aloud in the way of jahiliyyah.
  • Slapping the face, beating the chest, pulling hair or tearing clothes.
  • Words of anger at Allah, such as "why did Allah do this to me".
  • Hiring professional mourners.

"The dead are punished for the crying of their family." This hadith is authentic, and it worries many families. Scholars explain that it refers to wailing, not tears, and applies when the dead person asked for it or approved of it while alive. Aisha also explained it with the ayah that no soul bears the burden of another. Your tears do not harm your loved one.

Patience (sabr) does not mean feeling nothing. It means holding on to faith while the heart hurts. The reward is greatest at the first shock. See dua for patience and Quran verses about the death of a loved one.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:155-156

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return."

The patient say these words at loss, and receive good news.

Quran, Surah Al-An'aam 6:164

Say, "Is it other than Allah I should desire as a lord while He is the Lord of all things? And every soul earns not [blame] except against itself, and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you concerning that over which you used to differ."

A person is not punished for others' actions they did not cause.
