How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for all of it is good, and that is for no one but the believer. If something good happens to him, he is thankful, and that is good for him. If something bad happens to him, he is patient, and that is good for him.

Narrated by Suhayb ar-Rumi · Sahih Muslim 2999 · Sahih

(The Prophet ﷺ passed a woman weeping at a grave and said:) Fear Allah and be patient. ... (When she came to him later, he said:) Patience is at the first blow.

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik · Sahih al-Bukhari 1283; Sahih Muslim 926 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Whoever tries to keep from asking, Allah will keep him from it. Whoever seeks to be free of need, Allah will make him free of need. Whoever tries to be patient, Allah will make him patient. And no one has been given a gift better and greater than patience.

Narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri · Sahih al-Bukhari 1469; Sahih Muslim 1053; Sahih al-Bukhari 6470 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

No tiredness, illness, worry, sadness, harm or grief befalls a Muslim, not even a thorn that pricks him, except that Allah wipes out some of his sins by it.

Narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and Abu Hurayrah · Sahih al-Bukhari 5641; Sahih Muslim 2573 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

The size of the reward is with the size of the trial. When Allah loves a people, He tests them. Whoever accepts it has Allah's pleasure, and whoever is angry has His anger.

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik · Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2396; Sunan Ibn Majah 4031 · Graded hasan sahih by al-Albani

(He was asked who are tested most severely. He said:) The prophets, then the next best, then the next best. A man is tested according to his religion. If his religion is firm, his trial is severe, and if his religion is weak, he is tested according to it. Trials keep coming to a servant until they leave him walking on the earth with no sin on him.

Narrated by Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas · Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2398 · Graded hasan sahih by al-Albani

When Allah wants good for someone, He afflicts him with trials.

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah · Sahih al-Bukhari 5645 · Sahih

There is no servant who is struck by a calamity and says: Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un, Allahumma'jurni fi musibati wa akhlif li khayran minha (We belong to Allah and to Him we return. O Allah, reward me in my calamity and give me something better in its place), except that Allah rewards him in his calamity and gives him something better in its place.

Umm Salamah said this when her husband Abu Salamah died, and Allah gave her the Prophet ﷺ as a husband. More on the phrase: Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un.

Narrated by Umm Salamah · Sahih Muslim 918 · Sahih

Allah said: When I test My servant through his two beloved ones and he is patient, I give him Paradise in place of them.

His two beloved ones are his eyes.

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik · Sahih al-Bukhari 5653 · Sahih

(A woman who had seizures asked him to pray for her. He said:) If you wish, be patient and you will have Paradise, or if you wish, I will pray to Allah to cure you. (She chose patience and asked him only to pray that she would not become uncovered, and he did.)

Narrated by Ibn Abbas · Sahih al-Bukhari 5652; Sahih Muslim 2576 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

When a servant's child dies, Allah says to His angels: Have you taken the child of My servant? They say: Yes. He says: Have you taken the fruit of his heart? They say: Yes. He says: What did My servant say? They say: He praised You and said: we belong to Allah and to Him we return. Allah says: Build a house for My servant in Paradise, and call it the House of Praise.

Narrated by Abu Musa al-Ash'ari · Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1021 · Graded hasan by al-Albani

The strong man is not the one who wrestles others down. The strong man is the one who controls himself when he is angry.

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah · Sahih al-Bukhari 6114; Sahih Muslim 2609 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

None of you should wish for death because of a harm that has befallen him. If he must, let him say: O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and take me when death is better for me.

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik · Sahih al-Bukhari 5671; Sahih Muslim 2680 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Weak sayings people share

These are often posted as hadith, but the hadith critics did not accept them as the Prophet's ﷺ words, or they are not found in the hadith books at all. Do not pass them on as hadith.

  • Weak

    "Patience is half of faith."

Where: Abu Nu'aym and al-Bayhaqi, as words of the Prophet ﷺ. Grade: weak as a hadith of the Prophet ﷺ. It is reported with a sound chain as a saying of the Companion Abdullah ibn Mas'ud.

  • Not a hadith

"Patience is the key to relief."

Where: A well-known Arabic proverb. Grade: not established as a hadith.

Arabic: the standard wording from the fawazahmed0 hadith-api dataset of the six books and the Muwatta, cut to the Prophet's ﷺ words. English: our own plain rendering. Guide

What these hadith say, and how to live by them

Short answer: the best known hadith about patience is "How wonderful is the affair of the believer ... if something bad happens to him, he is patient, and that is good for him" (Sahih Muslim 2999). Others teach that "patience is at the first blow" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1283), that no one is given a gift better than patience (Sahih al-Bukhari 1469), and that even a thorn's prick wipes out sins (Sahih al-Bukhari 5641).

Three kinds of patience

The scholars, following the Quran and these hadith, describe sabr in three areas: patience in obeying Allah (keeping the prayer and the fast when it is hard), patience in staying away from sin, and patience with what Allah decrees (illness, loss, poverty). The hadith above are mostly about the third, but the strong man who controls his anger shows the second.

What these hadith teach

  • The first moment matters. Patience is judged at the first shock, not after the grief has faded.
  • Patience can be learned. "Whoever tries to be patient, Allah will make him patient."
  • Pain is not wasted. Illness, worry and grief wipe out sins, and the greatest reward comes with the greatest trial.
  • Trials are not a sign of Allah's anger. The prophets were tested most of all, and "when Allah loves a people, He tests them".
  • Crying is not impatience. The Prophet ﷺ wept when his son Ibrahim died. What is forbidden is wailing, tearing clothes, and words of objection to Allah's decree.
  • Say the words. At any loss, say Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un and the dua of Umm Salamah.

Questions

Good to know

What is the most famous hadith about patience?

"How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for all of it is good ... if something bad happens to him, he is patient, and that is good for him" (Sahih Muslim 2999, from Suhayb).

What does "patience is at the first strike" mean?

The Prophet ﷺ told a woman crying at a grave to be patient. She did not recognise him and answered sharply. When she later came to apologise, he said that real patience is at the first shock (Sahih al-Bukhari 1283, Sahih Muslim 926).

Is "patience is half of faith" a hadith?

As words of the Prophet ﷺ it is weak. It is reported as a saying of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud.

Does Allah test those He loves?

Yes. "When Allah loves a people, He tests them. Whoever accepts it has His pleasure" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2396, graded hasan sahih by al-Albani).

Is it impatient to cry when someone dies?

No. The Prophet ﷺ wept for his son and said the eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, but we say only what pleases our Lord (Sahih al-Bukhari 1303). Wailing and words of objection are what is forbidden.
