We found the best of our life in patience.

Attributed to Ali ibn Abi Talib; Ibn al-Qayyim cites it in Uddat as-Sabirin

Reported from Ali in early collections; we say "attributed" because the chains are discussed.

Scholar

Patience is holding the soul back from panic, the tongue from complaining, and the limbs from slapping the cheeks and tearing the clothes.

Ibn al-Qayyim, his definition of patience in Uddat as-Sabirin

Scholar

Let the days do as they will, and be at peace when the decree arrives.

What Islam says about patience, and how to hold on to it

Patience, sabr, is mentioned in about ninety places in the Quran, Imam Ahmad said, and the Quran promises that Allah is with the patient and that their reward is without measure. These quotes gather the clearest of those verses with the hadith and the words of the early Muslims, so you can read, copy or share them with their sources.

Three kinds of patience

The scholars, Ibn al-Qayyim among them, describe patience in three parts: patience in obeying Allah, such as praying on time when you are tired; patience in keeping away from what He forbade; and patience with what He decrees, such as illness or loss. Most quotes about patience are about the third kind, but the first two are what build it.

What patience is not

Patience does not mean pretending you are not hurt. Yaqub wept for Yusuf until his eyes went white, and still said "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah" (12:86). The Prophet ﷺ wept when his son Ibrahim died and said the eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, but we say only what pleases our Lord (Sahih al-Bukhari 1303). What patience rules out is complaining against Allah, and words and actions of panic.

When to say what

  • At a loss: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun" (2:156), and the dua the Prophet ﷺ taught: "Allahumma jurni fi musibati wa akhlif li khayran minha" (Sahih Muslim 918).
  • In anxiety: the dua for patience and the dua for anxiety.
  • In a long trial: read Surah Yusuf, a whole surah about patience that ends in relief.
