Purity is half of faith. Alhamdulillah fills the scale, and Subhanallah and Alhamdulillah fill what is between the heavens and the earth. Prayer is light, charity is proof, patience is brightness, and the Quran is an argument for you or against you. Every person goes out in the morning and sells himself, either setting himself free or ruining himself.

Narrated by Abu Malik al-Ash'ari · Sahih Muslim 223 · Sahih

No prayer is accepted without purification, and no charity from what was taken dishonestly.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar · Sahih Muslim 224 · Sahih

The key to prayer is purification. Its opening is the takbir, and its close is the taslim.

Narrated by Ali ibn Abi Talib · Sunan Abi Dawud 61; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3 · Graded hasan sahih by al-Albani

When a Muslim, or a believer, makes wudu and washes his face, every sin he looked at with his eyes leaves his face with the water, or with the last drop of water. When he washes his hands, every sin his hands did leaves his hands with the water, or with the last drop of water. When he washes his feet, every sin his feet walked to leaves with the water, or with the last drop of water, until he comes out cleansed of sins.

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah · Sahih Muslim 244 · Sahih

My Ummah will be called on the Day of Resurrection with shining faces, hands and feet from the traces of wudu.

The longer version goes on to tell people to lengthen the shine. Several scholars, including Ibn Hajar, noted that this addition may be Abu Hurayrah's own words.

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah · Sahih al-Bukhari 136; Sahih Muslim 246 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Five things are part of the fitrah: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, plucking the armpit hair, clipping the nails and trimming the moustache.

Were it not that I would make it hard for my Ummah, or for the people, I would have ordered them to use the miswak with every prayer.

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah · Sahih al-Bukhari 887; Sahih Muslim 252 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

The miswak purifies the mouth and pleases the Lord.

Narrated by Aishah · Sunan an-Nasa'i 5 · Graded sahih by al-Albani

When one of you wakes up from sleep, let him wash his hand before putting it into the water for his wudu, for none of you knows where his hand spent the night.

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah · Sahih al-Bukhari 162; Sahih Muslim 278 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

(A man said: A person likes his clothes to be nice and his sandals to be nice. He said:) Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. Arrogance is rejecting the truth and looking down on people.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud · Sahih Muslim 91 · Sahih

(He passed two graves and said:) They are being punished, and not for something hard to avoid ... Yes, one of them did not shield himself from his urine, and the other went about spreading gossip.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas · Sahih al-Bukhari 216; Sahih Muslim 292 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Faith has seventy-odd or sixty-odd branches. The highest of them is saying la ilaha illallah, and the lowest is removing something harmful from the road. And modesty is a branch of faith.

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah · Sahih Muslim 35 · Sahih

Guide

What these hadith say, and how to live by them

Short answer: the best known hadith about cleanliness is "Purity is half of faith" (Sahih Muslim 223). The Prophet ﷺ also taught that no prayer is accepted without purification (Sahih Muslim 224), that wudu washes sins away with its water (Sahih Muslim 244), that the miswak "purifies the mouth and pleases the Lord" (Sunan an-Nasa'i 5), and that five acts of grooming belong to the fitrah (Sahih al-Bukhari 5889).

Purity of the body and of the heart

In these hadith, taharah has two layers. The outward one is the purity needed for prayer: wudu, ghusl, and keeping the body, clothes and place of prayer free of filth. The inward one is purity from sin, which is why wudu is described as washing sins away, and why "purity is half of faith" sits next to prayer, charity and patience. Learn the outward steps on how to make wudu and how to do ghusl.

Cleanliness for others

Several hadith are about other people's comfort, not only your own worship: do not relieve yourself on paths or in shade, remove harmful things from the road, and come to Jumu'ah washed. "Allah is beautiful and loves beauty" was said to a man who liked nice clothes, to show that looking clean and neat is not arrogance.

Is the Friday bath obligatory? Hanafi first

Hanafi position

The bath (ghusl) for Jumu'ah is a sunnah, not a duty. The word "wajib" in the hadith of Abu Sa'id is read as "strongly urged", because the Prophet ﷺ also said: whoever makes wudu on Friday, that is fine, and whoever bathes, the bath is better (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 497, Sunan Abi Dawud 354). In the Hanafi view it is a sunnah for the prayer, so it should be done before going to Jumu'ah.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i and Hanbali
A stressed sunnah, not obligatory, for those attending Jumu'ah. Its time begins at true dawn, and closer to leaving for the prayer is better.
Maliki
A sunnah, but it must be joined to going to the prayer: a bath taken and then followed by a long gap or sleep does not count.

A minority of scholars, including the Zahiris, took the hadith literally and held the Friday bath to be obligatory. On the miswak, the Hanafis count it among the sunnahs of wudu, while the Shafi'is and Hanbalis also make it a sunnah at the start of every prayer.

Questions

Good to know

Is "cleanliness is half of faith" a hadith?

Yes, in the wording "purity is half of faith" (at-tuhuru shatr al-iman), Sahih Muslim 223, from Abu Malik al-Ash'ari. The popular wording "cleanliness is part of faith" is not found with a sound chain.

What are the five things of the fitrah?

Circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, plucking the armpit hair, clipping the nails and trimming the moustache (Sahih al-Bukhari 5889, Sahih Muslim 257). Another hadith, Sahih Muslim 261, lists ten, among them letting the beard grow, the miswak, rinsing the nose, washing the knuckles and washing after the toilet.

What does the hadith say about the miswak?

"Were it not that I would make it hard for my Ummah, I would have ordered them to use the miswak with every prayer" (Sahih al-Bukhari 887), and "the miswak purifies the mouth and pleases the Lord" (Sunan an-Nasa'i 5).

Does wudu wash away sins?

Yes. Sahih Muslim 244 says the sins of the eyes, hands and feet leave with the water of wudu, until the person comes out cleansed of sins. Scholars explain these are minor sins.

Is ghusl on Friday wajib?

In the Hanafi school and the other three, it is a sunnah, not an obligation, because of the hadith "whoever bathes, the bath is better" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 497). See the guide above.
