Guide
Choosing a girl's name, what to look for
A good Muslim girl name is one with a good meaning. That is the one rule the Sunnah sets: the Prophet ﷺ kept names with good meanings and changed names with bad ones.1 This list has 245 Muslim girl names, each with its Arabic spelling, meaning and origin, and a page that explains it in full. Filter by first letter, by origin, or by names from the Quran, and save the ones you like.
Names of the women around the Prophet ﷺ
Many parents name a daughter after the women of the Prophet's ﷺ family and the women companions, hoping she grows up with their faith and strength. Here you will find Khadijah, Aishah, Fatimah, Zaynab, Ruqayyah, Hafsah, Sawdah, Juwayriyah, Maymunah, Safiyyah, Sumayyah, Asma, Nusaybah, Rumaisa, Khawlah and Barakah.
Maryam, and names from the Quran
Maryam is the only woman named in the Quran, and Surah 19 is named after her. Other girls' names come from beautiful words in the Quran, such as Jannah, Tasnim, Kawthar, Firdaus, Sakinah, Rahma, Huda, Nur, Mawaddah, Izzah, Haya and Sidra. Read the verse a word comes from before you choose it: each name page shows the verse with its translation.
Names from the Quran
86 of these girls' names are in the Quran, either as a name or as a word. The Quran filter above shows them all. A few examples: Afnan, Alaa, Aliyah, Amal, Amanah, Amani, Aminah and Aqsa. A name does not need to be in the Quran to be a good name, but many parents like the link to a verse.
Companions and great Muslims of the past
21 names here were carried by companions of the Prophet ﷺ or the women of his family, such as Afra, Aishah, Arwa, Atikah, Batool, Habiba, Hafsah and Hind. Each name page lists the famous people who carried it.
Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Urdu names
A Muslim name does not have to be Arabic. Scholars allow names from any language when the meaning is good and the name does not belong to another religion. Most names here are Arabic. There are also 14 Persian names, such as Farahnaz, Laleh, Maheen and Mahnoor, 7 Turkish names, such as Ayla, Dilara, Eda and Elif, and 43 names common in Urdu, such as Azka, Batool, Bilqis and Fadilah. Many South Asian names are Arabic words said the Urdu way, so they carry both labels.
Names to avoid
- Names that make someone the servant of anyone other than Allah, such as Abdun-Nabi or Abdul-Husayn.
- Names that belong to Allah alone, such as ar-Rahman or al-Khaliq, without Abd before them.
- Names with bad or proud meanings. A few popular names sound fine in English but mean something else in Arabic: each page here checks the Arabic first.
See also what bin, bint, abu and al mean in a full name, and the full list of boys' and girls' names.
- Sahih Muslim 2139: the Prophet ﷺ changing a name with a bad meaning.
- Sahih Muslim 2132: the names most beloved to Allah.
- Sahih Muslim 2315: the Prophet ﷺ naming his son Ibrahim.
- Meanings follow classical Arabic usage and the standard name dictionaries; Persian, Turkish and Urdu meanings follow the standard dictionaries of those languages. Our teachers will check each one.
