Guide
How to choose a Muslim name, with the generator
The generator picks names at random from the 528 names in our Islamic names list (283 for boys and 245 for girls), filtered by what you choose. Each result shows the Arabic spelling and the meaning, and links to a full page with the root, the pronunciation, the verse if the name is in the Quran, and famous people who had it. Press Shuffle for a new set, or Show all to see every match.
What the filters do
- Meaning groups the names by the theme of their meaning: light, faith, nature, strength, kindness, beauty, joy, wisdom, honour, Paradise and purity, and the names of prophets and Companions. We sorted them by the words in each meaning, so a name can be in more than one group. Names made of Abd and a name of Allah, such as Abdul-Karim, are under faith.
- Origin is the language the name comes from. Arabic names are the most common, but Persian, Turkish and Urdu names with good meanings are used by Muslims everywhere. The names of many prophets, such as Ibrahim and Musa, are Hebrew in origin and Arabic in the Quran.
- From the Quran keeps only names that appear in the Quran, as a name or as a word (201 names). Read the verse on the name's page before you choose, so you know the context the word is used in.
What the Sunnah says about names
A good name is one of a child's first rights. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The names dearest to Allah are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman."1 He changed names with bad meanings: he renamed a woman called Asiyah, "disobedient", Jamilah, "beautiful".2 And he warned against names that claim what belongs to Allah alone: "The most despicable name to Allah is a man who calls himself King of Kings."3
Any name with a good meaning is allowed, in any language. The best are names of servanthood to Allah, such as Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman, then the names of prophets, then other good names. Names that belong to Allah alone (such as al-Rahman or Khaliq on their own) must not be given to a person, and names that mean servant of anyone other than Allah are not allowed. Names with bad or proud meanings are disliked and should be changed.
Other madhhabs
- Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali
- The same in substance. Ibn Hazm reports agreement that names of servanthood to other than Allah, such as Abd al-Uzza, are forbidden.
When to name the baby
It is sunnah to name the child by the seventh day, when the aqiqah is done, and the Prophet ﷺ also named his son Ibrahim on the night he was born.4 See the aqiqah guide.
- Sahih Muslim 2132, from Ibn Umar.

Questions
Good to know
How does the Islamic name generator work?
It picks names at random from our list of 528 Muslim names, using your choices: boy or girl, first letter, meaning, origin, and whether the name is in the Quran. Press Shuffle for new suggestions.
Are all these names Islamic?
Yes. Each has a good meaning, which is what the Sunnah asks for. They include names of prophets and Companions, words from the Quran, and Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Urdu names used by Muslims.
Can a Muslim name be non-Arabic?
Yes. A name does not have to be Arabic. Scholars allow names from any language as long as the meaning is good and the name is not tied to another religion.
Can I save the names I like?
Yes. Tap the heart on a name. Your list is kept on this device and also shows on our Islamic names page.
Which names are from the Quran?
