Guide
Choosing a name, what the Sunnah teaches.
A name is the first gift parents give a child. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The most beloved of your names to Allah are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman."1 He also changed names with bad meanings to good ones, such as changing Asiyah ("disobedient") to Jamilah ("beautiful").2
Good choices
- Names that show servitude to Allah: Abdullah, Abdur-Rahman, Abdul-Karim, and so on with any of Allah's names.
- Names of the prophets, such as Ibrahim, Musa, Yusuf and Isa.
- Names of the companions and the women of the Prophet's ﷺ family, such as Khadijah, Aishah and Fatimah.
- Names with good meanings, especially words from the Quran.
Names to avoid
- Names that show servitude to anyone other than Allah, such as Abdun-Nabi or Abdul-Husayn.
- Names that belong to Allah alone, such as Al-Khaliq or Ar-Rahman, without "Abd" before them.
- Names with bad or arrogant meanings.
When to name the baby
Naming the baby on the seventh day is recommended, together with the aqiqah and shaving the head, and it is fine to name the baby on the day of birth. The aqiqah is mustahabb (recommended): two sheep or goats for a boy and one for a girl, or a share in a larger animal.3
Other madhhabs
- Shafi'i, Hanbali
- The aqiqah is a confirmed sunnah (sunnah muakkadah).
- Maliki
- The aqiqah is a sunnah, with one animal for a boy or a girl.
- Sahih Muslim 2132.
- Sahih Muslim 2139.
- Jami at-Tirmidhi 1522, graded sahih; Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar. The other madhhabs' positions are summarised from their standard manuals.
