Dua for a new baby, and the Sunnah of birth

When a baby is born, ask Allah to protect the child and bless the family. The Quran records the dua of Maryam's mother over her newborn: wa inni u'idhuha bika wa dhurriyyataha minash-shaytanir-rajim. To congratulate the parents, many scholars recommend the words of al-Hasan al-Basri, Barakallahu laka fil-mawhubi lak.

Dua 1: Protection for the newborn

وَإِنِّىٓ أُعِيذُهَا بِكَ وَذُرِّيَّتَهَا مِنَ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنِ ٱلرَّجِيمِ

Wa innī uʿīdhuhā bika wa dhurriyyatahā minash-shayṭānir-rajīm

And I seek refuge for her in You and [for] her descendants from Satan, the expelled [from the mercy of Allah]. (For a boy, many say uʿīdhuhū bika wa dhurriyyatahū.)

Quran 3:36, translation by Sahih International

Dua 2: To congratulate the parents

Bārakallāhu laka fil-mawhūbi lak, wa shakartal-wāhib, wa balagha ashuddah, wa ruziqta birrah

May Allah bless you in the one given to you. May you thank the Giver, may the child reach full strength, and may you be granted their kindness.

The words of al-Hasan al-Basri, cited by al-Nawawi in al-Adhkar. Not a hadith of the Prophet ﷺ

Dua 3: The parents' reply

بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكَ وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكَ، وَجَزَاكَ اللَّهُ خَيْرًا

Bārakallāhu laka wa bāraka ʿalayk, wa jazākallāhu khayrā

May Allah bless you and shower blessings on you, and reward you with good.

Guide

When and how to say it

When a baby is born, ask Allah to protect the child and bless the family. The Quran records the dua of Maryam's mother over her newborn: wa inni u'idhuha bika wa dhurriyyataha minash-shaytanir-rajim. To congratulate the parents, many scholars recommend the words of al-Hasan al-Basri, Barakallahu laka fil-mawhubi lak.

The Sunnah of a new birth

  • Adhan in the right ear. Abu Rafi said he saw the Prophet ﷺ give the adhan in the ear of al-Hasan when he was born. Al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan sahih, while other scholars weakened it because of one narrator; it is widely practised.1 The iqamah in the left ear is reported in a much weaker narration.
  • Tahnik. Abu Musa brought his newborn son to the Prophet ﷺ, who named him Ibrahim, softened a date and rubbed it on the baby's palate, and made dua for blessing for him.2
  • A good name. Name the child on the day of birth or by the seventh day. Browse Islamic baby names with their meanings.
  • Aqiqah on the seventh day. "Every child is held in pledge for its aqiqah, which is sacrificed for it on the seventh day; its head is shaved and it is named."3
  • Protection. Say the protection dua over the child, as the Prophet ﷺ did for his grandsons: see dua for protection.
Hanafi position

Aqiqah is recommended (mustahabb), not an emphasised sunnah. Two sheep or goats for a boy and one for a girl is the common practice, and one for a boy is also valid. It is best on the seventh day, otherwise the fourteenth or twenty-first.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i, Hanbali
Aqiqah is an emphasised sunnah: two sheep for a boy and one for a girl, on the seventh day.
Maliki
Aqiqah is sunnah, with one sheep for a boy or a girl.

Congratulating the family

There is no fixed wording from the Prophet ﷺ for congratulating parents on a birth. Al-Nawawi recommended the words of al-Hasan al-Basri (Dua 2), with the reply in Dua 3.4 A simple Barakallahu lakum and a dua for the mother's recovery are good too.

  1. Sunan Abi Dawud 5105; Jami at-Tirmidhi 1514.
  2. Sahih al-Bukhari 5467.
  3. Sunan Abi Dawud 2838, graded sahih.
  4. Al-Nawawi, al-Adhkar, on congratulating a birth.
  5. Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar, on aqiqah. The other madhhabs' positions are summarised from their standard manuals.
