How it works

Three steps, nothing to install

1Choose

Pick the ayat and a qari

Any surah, any range. Murattal at a steady pace, Mujawwad for the melodic style, or Al-Husary's teaching recitation with a pause after each ayah.

2Listen

Follow along

Each ayah lights up as it plays, with the Uthmani Arabic, transliteration and your translation. Tap any ayah to play from there.

3Keep it

Save one MP3

The recordings are joined on your device without re-encoding, so the file sounds exactly as the qari recorded it.

Guide

Memorising by listening, and the manners of it

Most people who memorise the Quran do it by ear first: they hear an ayah many times from one qari, then say it back. This player is built for that. Choose a short range, set each ayah to repeat, and stay with one reciter so the rhythm and the stops stay the same every time.

A simple way to memorise a new surah

  1. Listen first. Play the whole range once with the translation on, so you know what you are learning.
  2. Take two or three ayat. Set "Repeat each" to 5 or 7 and recite along under your breath.
  3. Use the teaching recitation. Al-Husary (Muallim) leaves a gap after each ayah for you to repeat it aloud.
  4. Join them up. Turn the repeat down to once, switch on Loop the range, and recite the new ayat together with the ones before.
  5. Test yourself. Turn off the transliteration and read from the Arabic. Then recite without looking and check yourself against the audio.

Listening with attention

Allah says: "So when the Quran is recited, listen to it and pay attention, that you may receive mercy."1 Sit up if you can, keep the volume at a respectful level, and avoid playing it as background noise in places where people cannot listen.

Ayat of prostration

Fifteen places in the Quran are linked to the prostration of recitation (sajdat al-tilawah). The player marks them with a Sajdah label so you can stop and prostrate.

Hanafi position

There are 14 ayat of prostration, including Sad 38:24 and not the second one in Al-Hajj (22:77). The prostration is wajib on the person who recites one of them and on anyone who hears it recited. Most contemporary Hanafi scholars hold that hearing a recording does not make it wajib, though prostrating is still good.2

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
14 ayat, including 22:77 and not 38:24, where a prostration of thanks is made outside the prayer. The prostration is sunnah, not wajib.
Maliki
11 ayat, leaving out 22:77 and the three in the later surahs (53:62, 84:21 and 96:19). The prostration is a confirmed sunnah.
Hanbali
14 ayat, including both in Al-Hajj and not 38:24. The prostration is sunnah for the reciter and for the one who listens on purpose.
  1. Quran 7:204, translation by Sahih International.
  2. Al-Marghinani, al-Hidayah, Bab Sujud al-Tilawah. The other madhhabs' positions are summarised from their standard manuals.

Questions

Good to know

Is the recitation made by AI?

No. Every ayah is a real recording by the qari you pick. The player only chooses the ayat, plays them in order and joins them into one file when you download.

Which qaris can I choose?

29 recitations in the Hafs reading: 23 Murattal, including Mishary Alafasy, Abdul Basit, Al-Husary, Al-Minshawi, As-Sudais and Maher Al-Muaiqly, 5 Mujawwad, and Al-Husary's teaching recitation.

How does repeating help me memorise?

Set "Repeat each" to 3, 5 or more and each ayah plays that many times before the next one. Switch on Loop the range to keep going. The guide above has a step by step method.

Why is the Bismillah shown on its own?

Every surah except At-Tawbah opens with the Bismillah. In the Hafs numbering it is counted as ayah 1 of Al-Fatiha only, so for other surahs it plays first and is not numbered. In the Hanafi school it is an ayah of the Quran placed between the surahs.

Where do the audio and text come from?

The audio comes from EveryAyah.com. The Uthmani Arabic, the transliteration and the translations come from AlQuran.cloud, based on Tanzil.

Can I share a recitation?

Yes. Press Share and the link opens with the same surah, ayat, qari, repeat and translation.

Can I use the MP3 anywhere?

Downloads are for personal listening and learning. The recordings belong to the qaris and their publishers, so keep them unaltered and ask the rights holder before publishing them.
