[Mention] when Allah said, "O Jesus, indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify you from those who disbelieve and make those who follow you [in submission to Allah alone] superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me is your return, and I will judge between you concerning that in which you used to differ.

Meaning and lessons

What Quran 3:54 means, in brief

The disbelievers among Isa's people plotted to kill him, and Allah planned, and Allah is the best of planners. Ibn Kathir explains that Allah's plan was to raise Isa to Himself and save him (3:55), so that their plot failed.

The Arabic word makr, when used of Allah, means His just response to those who plot against the truth: He brings their plans to nothing. It is not deception, and scholars say it is only attributed to Allah in this kind of context, as a recompense matching what the plotters did.

Summarised in our own words from Tafsir Ibn Kathir, on Quran 3:54. Translation of the ayah: Sahih International.
