Quran 17:81, truth has come

Surah Al-Isra, ayah 81: "And say, "Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart."" Read it in Arabic with transliteration and the Sahih International translation, with the ayah before and after it, and listen to it recited.

17:80Before

Wa qur Rabbi adkhilnee mudkhala sidqinw wa akhrijnee mukhraja sidqinw waj'al lee milladunka sultaanan naseeraa

And say, "My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority."

17:81This ayah

Wa qul jaaa'al haqqu wa zahaqal baatil; innal baatila kaana zahooqaa

And say, "Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart."

17:82After

Wa nunazzilu minal quraani maa huwa shifaaa'unw wa rahmatul lilmu'mineena wa laa yazeeduz zaalimeena illaa khasaaraa

And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.

Meaning and lessons

What Quran 17:81 means, in brief

Allah tells the Prophet ﷺ to say: the truth has come and falsehood has vanished; falsehood is bound to vanish. Ibn Kathir reports from Abdullah ibn Masud that when the Prophet ﷺ entered Makkah on the day of the conquest, there were 360 idols around the Kaaba, and he struck them with a stick in his hand, reciting this ayah (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).

The ayah is a promise as much as a description: falsehood may look strong for a time, but it has no root and does not last. Ibn Kathir adds that the truth here is the Quran, faith and beneficial knowledge that came from Allah.
