Short answer
No, it is not haram. Sitting to eat and drink is the sunnah, and doing so standing without need is makruh tanzihi (disliked, not sinful) in the Hanafi school. The Prophet ﷺ is reported both to have discouraged drinking while standing and to have drunk Zamzam standing, so the scholars read the first as guidance toward the better way.
Eating or drinking while standing without an excuse is makruh tanzihi. Hanafi texts list drinking Zamzam, and the water left over from wudu, standing as recommended.
Other madhhabs
- Maliki
- Imam Malik saw no harm in drinking while standing, relying on reports that the rightly guided caliphs did so.
Explanation
The four schools agree that eating or drinking while standing is not sinful; they differ only on whether it is mildly disliked. Several hadith say the Prophet ﷺ discouraged drinking standing, and in one he told a person who forgot to make himself vomit. Other sound hadith say he drank Zamzam standing, and Companions reported eating while walking and drinking while standing in his time.
The scholars brought these together: sitting is the sunnah and the better manner, the strong wording is to train people in good manners and health, and standing is permitted to show that it is not forbidden. So:
- At home and at meals, sit to eat and drink.
- A quick drink while standing, at a buffet, in a queue or on the go, is not a sin.
- Zamzam water may be drunk standing, facing the qiblah, as the Prophet ﷺ did.
Walking while eating in the street is a matter of dignity more than fiqh. Scholars disliked it for people of standing because it was seen as poor manners in their society. If it is normal where you live and does no harm, it is not blameworthy, though sitting is still better.
For the other manners of eating, see eating with the right hand and sunnahs of daily life.
The evidence
Sahih Muslim 2024
Sahih... نهى أن يشرب الرجل قائما ...
"He forbade a man to drink while standing."
The basis for sitting being the sunnah.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1637
Sahih... سقيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من زمزم فشرب وهو قائم ...
"I gave the Messenger of Allah Zamzam water, and he drank it while standing."
Shows drinking standing is permitted.
Where the ruling is recorded
- Nur al-Idah with Maraqi al-Falah, Kitab al-Taharah, on the etiquette of wudu. Drinking the leftover water of wudu standing is listed among the recommended acts.
- al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, Kitab al-Karahiyya, chapter on eating and drinking. Drinking standing is disliked without being sinful.
