Short answer
There is no fixed age. Many families start the Arabic letters and short surahs around age four or five, when the child can sit and repeat. In the Hanafi school, parents must make sure a child learns at least al-Fatihah and enough Quran to pray, and teaching more brings great reward.
Learning the amount of Quran needed for prayer, al-Fatihah and a short surah, is fard on every Muslim, and the guardian must teach it before puberty. Reading the whole Quran is a great virtue, and memorising the whole Quran is a communal obligation (fard kifayah) on the Muslims.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
The Prophet ﷺ said the best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it. He also said that the one who reads it with difficulty, stumbling over it, gets a double reward. So no child is too slow and no start is too small. Ibn Abbas said he had memorised the shorter surahs by the age of ten. The four schools agree on the core duty.
A simple path by age:
- Birth to 3: let the child hear the Quran at home, at bedtime and in the car. Try Quran radio.
- 3 to 5: al-Fatihah, the last three surahs and short duas by listening and repeating.
- 4 to 6: the Arabic letters with the Noorani Qaida.
- 6 onward: reading from the mushaf with a teacher, basic tajweed, and steady memorisation.
- Hifz: many children start full memorisation at 7 to 10. Plan it with the hifz planner.
Tips: a short daily lesson beats a long weekly one. A teacher who is kind keeps a child coming back. Praise effort, not only speed, and let the child see you reading too. Track progress with the Quran tracker.
Hanafi scholars allow giving a mushaf to children for learning even if they are not in wudu, since requiring it of them would be a hardship. Adults should still teach them respect for it.
