Guide
How the Hijri calendar works.
The Hijri calendar is the Islamic lunar calendar. It has twelve months of 29 or 30 days, each starting with the new crescent moon, so a Hijri year is 354 or 355 days long. Because it is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, Ramadan, Hajj and Eid move through the seasons over a cycle of about 33 years.
The calendar counts from the hijrah, the Prophet's ﷺ migration from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. Umar ibn al-Khattab made it the official calendar, with Muharram as the first month. Allah says: "Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve lunar months... of these, four are sacred."1 The sacred months are Muharram, Rajab, Dhu al-Qadah and Dhu al-Hijjah.
The twelve months
| # | Month | Arabic | Known for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Muharram | مُحَرَّم | Sacred month. Ashura on the 10th. |
| 2 | Safar | صَفَر | |
| 3 | Rabi al-Awwal | رَبِيع الأَوَّل | The month the Prophet ﷺ was born. |
| 4 | Rabi al-Thani | رَبِيع الآخِر | |
| 5 | Jumada al-Ula | جُمَادَى الأُولَى | |
| 6 | Jumada al-Akhirah | جُمَادَى الآخِرَة | |
| 7 | Rajab | رَجَب | Sacred month. |
| 8 | Shaban | شَعْبَان | The Prophet ﷺ fasted much of it. |
| 9 | Ramadan | رَمَضَان | The month of fasting. |
| 10 | Shawwal | شَوَّال | Eid al-Fitr on the 1st. Six fasts of Shawwal. |
| 11 | Dhu al-Qadah | ذُو القَعْدَة | Sacred month. |
| 12 | Dhu al-Hijjah | ذُو الحِجَّة | Sacred month. Hajj, Arafah and Eid al-Adha. |
Calculation or moon sighting?
Saudi Arabia uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, which is calculated, for civil dates, and announces Ramadan and the Eids from sightings. The Fiqh Council of North America and Turkey calculate their months in advance. Many communities, including most in South Asia and many Hanafi masjids in the West, begin each month only when the crescent is seen. This page shows Umm al-Qura by default, with a one-day adjustment for local sighting.
The start of Ramadan, Shawwal and Dhul Hijjah is set by sighting the crescent, or by completing 30 days of the month before. Astronomical calculation alone is not used to start these months. Sightings in one region can be accepted in another when they reach it reliably, so a sighting in a distant country may be followed.2
Other madhhabs
- Shafi'i
- Sighting, not calculation. A sighting binds places in the same region (sharing the same horizon, matla), not the whole world.
- Maliki, Hanbali
- Sighting, not calculation. A sighting in one land binds all Muslims who hear of it.
- Quran 9:36, translation by Sahih International.
- Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar, Kitab al-Sawm, on ikhtilaf al-matali. The other madhhabs' positions are summarised from their standard manuals.

Questions
Good to know.
What is the Hijri date today?
Today, Friday, 30 October 2026, is 19 Jumada al-Ula 1448 AH by the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia. Where the month starts by local moon sighting it may be a day earlier or later.
When does the Islamic day begin?
At sunset. In the Islamic calendar the night comes before its day, so after Maghrib the Hijri date moves on by one day. Calendars and phones change the date at midnight for convenience.
Why do Hijri dates differ between countries?
Each month starts with the new crescent. Saudi Arabia uses the calculated Umm al-Qura calendar for civil dates, Turkey and others calculate their own, and many communities in South Asia and the West start the month by sighting the moon. That can put countries a day apart.
What year is it in the Islamic calendar?
It is 1448 AH. The Hijri calendar counts from the Prophet's ﷺ migration (hijrah) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE.
How many days are in a Hijri month?
29 or 30, depending on when the new moon is seen. A Hijri year has 354 or 355 days, about 11 days shorter than the solar year.
