Questions Women

Can you pray if you are spotting before your period?

Pending review by our scholars

Short answer

It depends on how long it lasts. In the Hanafi school, spotting of any colour counts as part of your period if the bleeding in total reaches at least 3 days and stays within 10. If you stop praying and the bleeding stops before 3 days, it was not a period, and you make up the prayers you missed.

Hanafi position

Any colour other than pure white, seen when a period is possible (at least 15 days after the last period ended), is treated as hayd from its first appearance, provided the total is 3 days (72 hours) or more and no more than 10 days. Under 3 days it is istihadah: she makes wudu, prays, and makes up the prayers she left.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
The minimum period is one day and night, so spotting that reaches 24 hours within the possible days is counted as menstruation.
Hanbali
The minimum is one day and night; spotting outside the habit days is not counted as menstruation.
Maliki
There is no minimum: even a single spot of blood at a time when a period is possible counts as menstruation for prayer.

Explanation

Spotting is light bleeding or a coloured stain, often brown or pink, before the flow starts. In Hanafi fiqh colour does not matter: red, brown, yellow, dark or murky are all treated as blood when they come at a time a period is possible. What matters is the total time.

How to act:

  • When the spotting starts at the time your period is due, or at least 15 days after your last period ended, stop praying and fasting, as with your period.
  • If the bleeding, counting the spotting, lasts 3 days (72 hours) or more and ends within 10 days, all of it was your period. No prayers are owed.
  • If it stops before 72 hours and does not come back within 10 days, it was not a period. Make up the prayers you missed during those days. No ghusl (full bath) is needed for that bleeding; wudu (ablution) is enough.
  • Spotting in the middle of your cycle, less than 15 days after your last period ended, is not a period. Keep praying.
  • Spotting during pregnancy is not a period in the Hanafi school. Keep praying.

The Prophet ﷺ told a woman with ongoing bleeding to leave prayer when her menstruation came and to wash and pray when it went. Tracking the start and end times in a notes app makes these questions much easier. If your cycle is irregular, see bleeding longer than 10 days and brown discharge, and ask a mufti about your pattern. Use the qada calculator for missed prayers.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:222

And they ask you about menstruation. Say, "It is harm, so keep away from wives during menstruation. And do not approach them until they are pure. And when they have purified themselves, then come to them from where Allah has ordained for you. Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves."
