Short answer
Yes. Nasheeds with clean words and no instruments are halal in the Hanafi school. The duff (a simple frame drum) is allowed at weddings and on occasions of joy such as Eid. Nasheeds with background music, or with voice effects made to sound just like instruments, take the ruling of music.
Nasheeds and poetry without instruments are mubah when their words are good, and rewarded when they remind of Allah and the Prophet ﷺ. Beating the duff without jingles is permitted to announce a nikah and on occasions of joy. Other instruments are not.
Other madhhabs
- Shafi'i
- Instruments are haram. The duff is allowed at weddings and other occasions of joy, and the stronger view in the school allows it even with small jingles.
- Maliki
- Instruments are prohibited. The duff is allowed at weddings, and some Maliki scholars also allowed the larger kabar drum there.
Explanation
Chanting is part of Muslim history. While the Companions dug the trench around Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ chanted with them: 'O Allah, there is no life but the life of the Hereafter.' He encouraged Hassan ibn Thabit to answer the poets of Quraysh and told him that Jibril was with him. A nasheed with good words and no instruments follows this tradition.
The duff is the one instrument the sunnah allows. The Prophet ﷺ said that what separates a lawful marriage from a forbidden one is the duff and the voice, meaning that a nikah should be announced openly with joy. At the wedding of al-Rubayyi' bint Mu'awwidh, girls beat the duff and sang about their fathers who died at Badr. When one of them sang that he knows what tomorrow brings, he told her to drop that line and go back to what she was singing before.
Conditions that keep a nasheed halal:
- The words are true and clean, with no exaggeration that crosses into shirk.
- There are no instruments. Many Hanafi muftis also warn against 'vocals only' tracks whose layered effects sound exactly like a band.
- The duff, where used, is a plain frame drum without jingles, at a wedding, Eid or similar happy occasion.
- It does not replace the Quran and dhikr in your day.
So a school assembly singing about the Prophet ﷺ, a wedding with the duff, or a nasheed you listen to in the car are all fine, as long as these conditions hold.
The evidence
Quran, Surah Ash-Shu'araa 26:227
Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allah often and defend [the Muslims] after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned.
The Quran excludes believing poets who remember Allah from its criticism of poets.
