Short answer
Up to two full years. The Quran names two complete years as the full term, and parents may wean earlier by mutual agreement. In the Hanafi school the fatwa is that the nursing period is two lunar years, and breastfeeding should not go beyond it without need.
The fatwa follows Abu Yusuf and Muhammad: the nursing period is two lunar years, for feeding and for milk kinship. Imam Abu Hanifa held thirty months. Continuing to breastfeed after the period without need is not permitted.

- Maliki
- A short time after two years, about a month or two, still counts as the nursing period for milk kinship.
Explanation
Allah says that mothers may breastfeed their children two complete years for whoever wants to complete the nursing. Another ayah gives pregnancy and weaning together as thirty months, and since the shortest pregnancy is six months, this leaves twenty-four months of nursing. A third says weaning is in two years.
Common questions:
- Is it a sin to wean early? No. The Quran allows weaning before two years when both parents agree after consultation and the child is not harmed.
- Is formula allowed? Yes. If the mother cannot or chooses not to breastfeed, formula or another nursing woman is permissible. The Quran mentions hiring a wet nurse.
- Does pumped milk count? Yes, it is breastfeeding in every ruling.
- Who pays? The father is responsible for providing for the mother and baby.
The two years matter for another reason: milk kinship. A baby nursed by another woman within this period becomes her milk child. See milk kinship.

Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:233
Mothers may breastfeed their children two complete years for whoever wishes to complete the nursing [period]. Upon the father is the mothers' provision and their clothing according to what is acceptable. No person is charged with more than his capacity. No mother should be harmed through her child, and no father through his child. And upon the [father's] heir is [a duty] like that [of the father]. And if they both desire weaning through mutual consent from both of them and consultation, there is no blame upon either of them. And if you wish to have your children nursed by a substitute, there is no blame upon you as long as you give payment according to what is acceptable. And fear Allah and know that Allah is Seeing of what you do.
Sets two years as the full nursing term and allows weaning by agreement.
Quran, Surah Al-Ahqaf 46:15
And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, "My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims."
Combined with the six-month minimum pregnancy, it points to two years of nursing.
Quran, Surah Luqman 31:14
And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.
Confirms the two year term.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5102
Sahih...
"Nursing that counts is only that which satisfies hunger."
Nursing has its effect in infancy, when milk is the child's food.
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1152
Graded sahih...
"Nursing creates no prohibition except what fills the stomach from the breast, before weaning."
Ties the rulings of nursing to the infant period.
Where the ruling is recorded
- al-Hidaya, Kitab al-Rada'. The nursing period and the difference between Abu Hanifa and his two students.
- al-Durr al-Mukhtar, Kitab al-Rada'. States that the fatwa is on two years and that nursing after the period is not permitted.
