Short answer
Yes. Belief in Allah's revealed books is an article of faith: the Tawrat (Torah) given to Musa, the Zabur (Psalms) to Dawud, the Injil (Gospel) to Isa, and the Quran to Muhammad ﷺ. Muslims believe the originals were true revelation, but that the texts people hold today were changed over time, so the Quran is the final, protected book.
Belief in all the books Allah revealed is required in general, and in the named books specifically. Denying that Allah revealed the Torah or the Gospel is disbelief, while following their present texts in place of the Quran is not allowed, since the Quran confirms and supersedes them.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
The Quran says: "We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light" (5:44), and that Allah revealed the Torah and the Gospel before the Quran, which confirms what came before it (3:3). It also mentions the Zabur given to Dawud (4:163) and the scriptures of Ibrahim and Musa (87:19). Muslims believe in these as part of their own faith (2:285).
The Quran also says some people wrote scripture with their own hands and claimed it came from Allah (2:79). Muslim scholars therefore believe the Torah and Gospel as they exist today contain parts of the original revelation alongside human additions, changes and lost parts. The Quran alone has the promise of protection (15:9).
The Prophet ﷺ gave a balanced rule for what the People of the Book report from their scriptures: "Do not believe them and do not deny them", and say: we believe in Allah and what was sent down to us. Where their texts agree with the Quran, Muslims accept that part as true. Where they contradict it, Muslims follow the Quran. Where the Quran is silent, Muslims neither confirm nor reject.
So Muslims do believe in Musa and the Torah he received, honour him as one of the greatest prophets, and share many stories with Jews and Christians. Read more in What is the Quran?, Prophet Musa and the six articles of faith.
The evidence
Quran, Surah Al-Maaida 5:44
Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light. The prophets who submitted [to Allah] judged by it for the Jews, as did the rabbis and scholars by that with which they were entrusted of the Scripture of Allah, and they were witnesses thereto. So do not fear the people but fear Me, and do not exchange My verses for a small price. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed - then it is those who are the disbelievers.
The Torah was revealed by Allah.
Quran, Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:3
He has sent down upon you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming what was before it. And He revealed the Torah and the Gospel.
The Quran confirms the earlier revealed books.
Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:79
So woe to those who write the "scripture" with their own hands, then say, "This is from Allah," in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn.
Some people changed scripture and attributed it to Allah.
Quran, Surah Al-Hijr 15:9
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian.
Only the Quran is promised protection.
Sahih al-Bukhari 4485
Sahih...
"Do not believe the People of the Book and do not deny them; say: we believe in Allah and what was sent down to us."
Gives the rule for reports from the earlier scriptures.
Where the ruling is recorded
- al-Fiqh al-Akbar (Imam Abu Hanifa), Opening section on the articles of faith. Lists belief in Allah's books among the foundations of faith.
- al-Aqida al-Tahawiyya, Section on the books and messengers. Affirms belief in all the books revealed to the messengers.
