In short: when Allah sent Musa to Pharaoh, Musa asked for his brother Harun as a helper, because he was more eloquent. Allah made Harun a prophet as a gift to Musa (19:53). Together they went to Pharaoh. When Musa went to the mountain for forty nights, Harun led the people, and when some of them worshipped the golden calf, he warned them but could not stop them.

The story of Harun

A gift to his brother

Musa asked: "And appoint for me a minister from my family, Harun, my brother. Increase through him my strength and let him share my task" (20:29-32). He said: "My brother Harun is more fluent than me in tongue, so send him with me as support" (28:34). Allah answered: "You have been granted your request, O Musa" (20:36). Allah says: "And We gave him out of Our mercy his brother Harun as a prophet" (19:53).

Leading in Musa's absence

Before going to meet his Lord, Musa said: "Take my place among my people, do right, and do not follow the way of the corrupters" (7:142). While he was away, al-Samiri made a calf. Harun told them: "O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order" (20:90). They said they would keep worshipping it until Musa returned (20:91).

Musa came back angry and seized his brother by the head. Harun said: "O son of my mother, do not seize me by my beard or by my head. Indeed, I feared that you would say, 'You caused division among the Children of Israel'" (20:94). Musa then prayed: "My Lord, forgive me and my brother and admit us into Your mercy" (7:151).

Harun in the hadith

When the Prophet ﷺ left Ali in charge of Madinah during the expedition to Tabuk, he said: "Are you not pleased to be to me in the position of Harun to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me?"1 On the Night Journey he met Harun in the fifth heaven.2

Lessons from the story

  • Asking Allah for good companions and helpers in good work is a prophetic dua.
  • Unity matters. Harun weighed the harm of division against the harm of the calf.
  • Speak the truth to the crowd, even when they refuse to listen.
  • A brother can be a gift from Allah: "Increase through him my strength."

Where it is in the Quran

The main passages about Harun, with links to read and listen to each surah:

What is authentic, and what is not

The Quran does not say whether Harun was older than Musa. Many historians said he was, following earlier scriptures. Reports that he died before Musa in the wilderness are also from the books of history. The Quran does not blame Harun for the calf. It clears him through his own words in 20:90.

We follow Ibn Kathir's Qasas al-Anbiya only where it rests on the Quran and sound hadith. Isra'iliyyat are reports taken from earlier scriptures and storytellers. Scholars allow mentioning them only when they do not contradict the Quran and Sunnah, and they are never treated as certain.

Questions

Why is Maryam called "sister of Harun" in the Quran?

In 19:28 her people call her "sister of Harun". The Prophet ﷺ explained that people used to name themselves after the prophets and righteous people before them (Muslim 2135). It means a descendant or a namesake, not Musa's brother's sister.

Was Harun a prophet?

Yes. "And We gave him out of Our mercy his brother Harun as a prophet" (19:53).

Did Harun make the golden calf?

No. Al-Samiri made it (20:85-88). Harun warned the people against it (20:90).

What did the Prophet ﷺ say about Harun and Ali?

"You are to me in the position of Harun to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me" (Bukhari 3706, Muslim 2404).
