Guide

Meaning, use and source.

Hasbiyallahu la ilaha illa huwa, alayhi tawakkaltu wa huwa rabbul-arshil-azim means "Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god but Him. On Him I rely, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne." It closes Surah At-Tawbah (Quran 9:129), where Allah tells the Prophet ﷺ what to say if people turn away.

When to say it

  • When you are anxious about the future, wronged by someone, or afraid.
  • When you have done what you can and need to leave the outcome to Allah.
  • In the morning and evening adhkar.

Seven times morning and evening

A report in Sunan Abi Dawud, from Abu ad-Darda, says that whoever says this ayah seven times in the morning and evening, Allah will suffice him in whatever worries him. Scholars differ on it: its stronger chain stops at Abu ad-Darda rather than the Prophet ﷺ, and some graded it weak. Saying the ayah is good in itself, since it is the Quran, but do not treat the promised reward as certain.

Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakil

A shorter phrase with the same meaning is in Quran 3:173: "Sufficient for us is Allah, and He is the best Disposer of affairs." Ibn Abbas said Ibrahim said it when he was thrown into the fire, and Muhammad ﷺ said it when told that an army had gathered against him (Sahih al-Bukhari 4563). Muslims say it when wronged or under pressure. The singular form is hasbiyallahu wa ni'mal wakil.

Trust, with effort

Saying hasbiyallah does not mean doing nothing. A man asked whether he should tie his camel or leave it and trust Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Tie it, and trust in Allah" (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2517, graded hasan). Do what you can, then hand the result to Allah with these words.

Spellings

Hasbiyallahu la ilaha illa huwa, hasbiallahu la ilaha illa hu, hasbi Allah and hasbunallah are all used. Hasbi means "my sufficiency" and hasbuna means "our sufficiency".

  1. Quran 9:129 and 3:173, translation by Sahih International.
  2. Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Adab, from Abu ad-Darda (its grading is disputed, see above).
  3. Sahih al-Bukhari 4563.
  4. Jami at-Tirmidhi 2517, graded hasan.
