Dua for a new home, moving in with barakah

There is no single dua in the hadith for moving into a new house. What the Quran and Sunnah do give is the dua of Nuh for a blessed place to settle, the refuge to say whenever you stop at a new place, and the sunnah of reciting Al-Baqarah at home. Say these when you move in, and the daily dua for entering the home after that.

Dua 1: For a blessed place to live

رَبِّ أَنزِلْنِى مُنزَلًۭا مُّبَارَكًۭا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْمُنزِلِينَ

Rabbi anzilnī munzalam-mubārakaw-wa anta khayrul-munzilīn

My Lord, let me land at a blessed landing place, and You are the best to accommodate [us].

Quran 23:29, translation by Sahih International

Dua 2: When you first stop in a new place

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

Aʿūdhu bi-kalimātillāhit-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created. (Whoever says it on stopping at a place is not harmed by anything until he leaves it.)

Sahih Muslim 2708

Dua 3: For the hosts, if you visit

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُمْ فِي مَا رَزَقْتَهُمْ، وَاغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَارْحَمْهُمْ

Allāhumma bārik lahum fī mā razaqtahum, waghfir lahum warḥamhum

O Allah, bless them in what You have provided for them, forgive them and have mercy on them. (The Prophet ﷺ said this for his hosts after eating.)

Sahih Muslim 2042

Guide

When and how to say it

There is no single dua in the hadith for moving into a new house. What the Quran and Sunnah do give is the dua of Nuh for a blessed place to settle, the refuge to say whenever you stop at a new place, and the sunnah of reciting Al-Baqarah at home. Say these when you move in, and the daily dua for entering the home after that.

What to do when you move in

  1. Say the refuge of Dua 2 when you first arrive, and Bismillah and salam each time you enter (see the dua for entering the home).
  2. Recite Surah Al-Baqarah in the house. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not make your houses graves. Satan flees from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited."1 You can read it together over a few days, or play a recitation.
  3. Pray in your home. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Make some of your prayers in your houses, and do not make them graves."2 The sunnah and nafl prayers are the ones to pray there.
  4. Ask Allah for barakah with Dua 1, in your own words, and invite people to eat. Feeding people is one of the best deeds in Islam, and Shafi'i scholars name a meal for a new home (wakirah) among the invitations it is good to accept.

Things with no source

Some customs have no basis in the hadith: calling the adhan in every room, a special sacrifice to protect the house, or a set number of recitations before you may move in. You do not need them. What protects a home is the dhikr of Allah, the Quran and the prayer.

What to say to someone with a new home

No set wording is reported. Say barakallahu lakum (may Allah bless it for you), or any good dua. If they feed you, say the Prophet's ﷺ dua for hosts (Dua 3).
