Dua for help from Allah, when you need Him most

When something troubled the Prophet ﷺ, he would say Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum, bi rahmatika astagheeth: "O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, by Your mercy I seek help." He also asked, Rabbi a'inni wa la tu'in alayya: "My Lord, help me and do not help others against me." These and the Quran's own duas for help are below.

Dua 1: When something distresses you

Yā Ḥayyu yā Qayyūm, bi-raḥmatika astaghīth

O Ever-Living, O Sustainer of all, by Your mercy I call for help.

Jami at-Tirmidhi 3524, from Anas, graded hasan by al-Albani

Dua 2: Rabbi a'inni (the first part of the dua)

Rabbi aʿinnī wa lā tuʿin ʿalayy, wanṣurnī wa lā tanṣur ʿalayy, wamkur lī wa lā tamkur ʿalayy, wahdinī wa yassiril-hudā lī, wanṣurnī ʿalā man baghā ʿalayy

My Lord, help me and do not help others against me. Give me victory and do not give others victory over me. Plan for me and do not plan against me. Guide me and make guidance easy for me, and help me against whoever wrongs me.

Jami at-Tirmidhi 3551, graded hasan sahih by at-Tirmidhi; Sunan Abi Dawud 1510, graded sahih

Dua 3: In every rakah of salah

Iyyāka naʿbudu wa iyyāka nastaʿīn

It is You we worship and You we ask for help.

Quran 1:5, translation by Sahih International

Dua 4: Said by Ibrahim in the fire

Ḥasbunallāhu wa niʿmal-wakīl

Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.

Quran 3:173, translation by Sahih International; Sahih al-Bukhari 4563

Dua 5: The call of Nuh

Guide

When and how to say it

When something troubled the Prophet ﷺ, he would say Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum, bi rahmatika astagheeth: "O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, by Your mercy I seek help." He also asked, Rabbi a'inni wa la tu'in alayya: "My Lord, help me and do not help others against me." These and the Quran's own duas for help are below.

How to ask Allah for help

  1. Turn to Him first. Allah says: "Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil?" (27:62, translation by Sahih International).
  2. Pray. Hudhayfah said that when a matter worried the Prophet ﷺ, he prayed.1 Allah says: "Seek help through patience and prayer" (2:45). Two rakahs and then dua is the way of the Sunnah; see Salat al-Hajah for the prayer of need and an honest note on its hadith.
  3. Call Him by His names. Dua 1 calls on Al-Hayy and Al-Qayyum. The Prophet ﷺ taught Fatimah a fuller form for morning and evening, ending "set right all my affairs and do not leave me to myself for the blink of an eye". It is on our Ya Hayyu ya Qayyum page.
  4. Ask with certainty, and do not rush. The Prophet ﷺ said a dua is answered as long as you do not say "I prayed and was not answered" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6340).
  5. Then do what you can. Ask people for help too, in what they are able to do. That is part of the means Allah has made.

Is there a dua for immediate help?

No dua comes with a promise of instant results, and the answer may come as what you asked for, as a harm turned away, or as reward saved for the Hereafter. But the Sunnah does have duas for moments of distress: Dua 1, the dua of distress (La ilaha illallahul-azimul-halim), and the dua of Yunus, of which the Prophet ﷺ said no Muslim calls with it for anything without Allah answering him.

About Dua 2

Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to make this dua. The full hadith goes on: "My Lord, make me grateful to You, remembering You, fearing You, obedient to You, humble before You, turning to You in repentance. My Lord, accept my repentance, wash away my sin, answer my call, make firm my proof, guide my heart, make my tongue true and remove the ill feeling from my heart."2 Learn the first part first.

Words of trust from the prophets

Ibn Abbas said that "Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakil" (Dua 4) was said by Ibrahim when he was thrown into the fire, and by Muhammad ﷺ when he was told that a great army had gathered against him.3 Nuh called on his Lord with Dua 5 after centuries of patience, and Allah opened the gates of the sky. Many people say it as Rabbi inni maghlubun fantasir; the Quran's wording is the one above. You can also say la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah, there is no power and no strength except with Allah.
